Diamond Award Coup
Drake & Macefield has scooped a top award for its steak and kidney pie in a major national competition. The business won one of
only seven diamond awards presented in the 2008 Smithfield Awards, run by the Q Guild, which represents some of the best butchers
in Britain.
The winning product, awarded maximum marks in the pies and bakery section, was one of a clutch of three gold and two silver awards
landed by Drake & Macefield. It also won gold for its steak and kidney pudding and thick pork sausage, and silver for Lincolnshire
sausage and chilli and cheeseburger.
Partner Ian Thompson travelled to the Butchers Hall in London to receive the diamond trophy and other awards from TV chef and
cookery school proprietor Lesley Waters. Ian said: “We’re absolutely thrilled. We normally do well in product evaluation events, but
a diamond award is the pinnacle and a wonderful promotional opportunity for the business.”
The Smithfield Awards are among the most prestigious in the meat industry and a true indication of excellence. More than 400 products
from Q butchers throughout the UK were assessed by an independent panel of experts at the meat technology department at Thomas Danby
College, Leeds.
2007 Great Yorkshire Pork Pie, Sausage & Products
Competition
Drake & Macefield took third prize in the black
pudding class at the 2007 Great Yorkshire Pork Pie, Sausage &
Products Competition staged by The Confederation of Yorkshire Butchers
Councils. The event attracted 300 entries from butchers across the
county.
The shop is no stranger to success in
the biggest and best regional meat trades competition in the country,
having won the large pork pie championship in 2004.
D&M "Growler" grabs more glory
Drake & Macefield's traditional pork pie, which has galloped away
with a glut of awards in meat industry competitions over the years, has
landed another accolade at a major regional product evaluation event.
At the British Pig Executive (BPEX) regional roadshow for butchers held
in York, Drake & Macefield's pork pie was presented with a gold medal,
the highlight of an awards windfall for the business.
Piemaker-in-chief at Drake & Macefield is in-house chef Miles
Hutchinson. As well as grabbing a coveted gold, two other pie
creations - pork, chicken and stuffing, and chicken and ham - also
landed silver medals. In addition, Drake & Macefield's dry cured
bacon and gammon, plus lamb meatballs in herb and tomato sauce, all
netted silver honours.
BPEX product evaluation events recognise and reward product
excellence and innovation among butchers.
Celebrity Chef Burger
A special beefburger recipe devised exclusively for The Guild of Q Butchers by celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson is now available
from Drake & Macefield throughout this year's barbecue season.
As a member of The Guild, Drake & Macefield are entitled to make and
promote the beefburger, which contains a secret blend of spices,
seasonings, chives and parsley selected by Antony.
To be a member of The Guild, a Q shop has to pass a regular independent audit on quality
and hygiene to standards well above the norm in the retail meat trade.
